Grade 5 · About 25 minutes · Support an opinion with reasons and details
5th Grade Opinion Writing Practice
Should a class use its spare shelf for books or games? Read the fictional classroom situation. Write an opinion paragraph with two clear reasons.
Use paper or a separate document for your answers. No account is required.
The skill
An opinion states what you think. A reason explains why you think it. A detail makes the reason specific. Strong opinion writing connects all three.
Original fictional passage
One shelf, two ideas
Ms. Chen’s class has one empty shelf beside the door. The students can use it for a book exchange or a collection of board games. The class must choose one use for this term.
For the book exchange, students can bring a book from home if they wish. Ms. Chen also has twelve books for the shelf. Students can borrow a book during the last ten minutes of the day. They can take it home until the next Friday.
For the game shelf, the school can provide four board games. Students can play them indoors during a wet lunch break. Each game needs two to four players. The class must check the pieces before each game goes back on the shelf.
Amir wants more books because he finishes his library book before the next library visit. Jo prefers games because she wants more things to do with classmates indoors. Both students agree that everyone should have a chance to use the shelf.
Check your understanding
Answer each question before you open its sample answer. Other answers can be correct if the text supports them.
Which detail supports Amir’s opinion?
Show sample answer
Amir finishes his library book before the next visit. The book exchange would give him another book to read.
Which detail supports Jo’s opinion?
Show sample answer
Each game needs two to four players. The games would give Jo a shared activity with classmates during wet lunch breaks.
Does the passage prove that one choice is best for everyone?
Show sample answer
No. It shows different needs. Either choice can support a clear opinion if the writer gives reasons from the passage.
Your writing task
Write a paragraph that recommends one use for the shelf. Include two reasons and details from the passage. Explain how each detail supports your choice.
Plan your response
- State your choice in the first sentence.
- Give your first reason.
- Add a passage detail that supports that reason.
- Explain why the detail matters.
- Repeat these steps for a second reason.
- End with a sentence that returns to your choice.
Study a sample response
Write your own response first. Use this example to compare ideas and evidence, not to copy sentences.
Show sample response
Our class should choose the book exchange. First, it would help students who need another book between library visits. Amir already has this problem. Second, students could read at home as well as at school. They could keep a book until Friday, so the shelf would support practice beyond the school day. For these reasons, I recommend the book exchange.
Check your work
- Does my first sentence state an opinion?
- Did I give two different reasons?
- Did I explain the link between each detail and my opinion?
- Did I avoid facts that the passage does not provide?
- Does each sentence start with a capital letter and end with punctuation?
